The 2024 Urology ST3 Selection Process & Interview
The Urology ST3 selection process is a national evaluation lasting up to 60 minutes, conducted by two Consultants who will independently score your performance. Additionally, a layperson may be present in your interview station, but their role is to assess the examiners for fairness, not you.
For the year 2024, the interview format mirrors that of 2023, comprising four stations covering:
Outpatient Station
(2-minute reading time, 13-minute interview)
- Focus on key aspects of history taking, relevant tests, investigations, and basic management of common outpatient complaints.
- Be prepared for both open-ended and direct questioning, with increasing difficulty if you’re performing well.
Emergency Station
(2-minute reading time, 13-minute interview)
- Demonstrate your ability to manage common urological emergencies at the level of a day-one urology registrar.
- Showcase your knowledge, teamwork and delegation skills, and capacity to prioritise tasks, often in the context of multiple complex clinical scenarios.
Communication Station
(2-minute reading time, 13-minute interview)
- Focus on patient-centered care primarily looking at communication skills, breaking bad news and empathy rather than specific disease knowledge (…however this is definitely a bonus).
- Many of these skills are developed through your direct experience on the ward and in clinic.
Skills Station
(2-minute reading time, 13-minute interview)
- Skills have been reintroduced as you clearly can’t perform this via your online interview, you’ll be asked a series of questions around the topic such as indications, equipment and procedural steps.
Portfolio/Self-Assessment
Your portfolio is a critical component of the ST3 selection process. You will submit this in advance of the interview via Oriel, along with evidence to support your application. The 2024 portfolio checklist can be found here where you’ll find scoring. Your portfolio self-assessment must be accurate – several candidates will be ‘spot-checked’ for evidence with some losing points or being withdrawn from the process entirely.
Make sure you get every point you possibly can by completing audit cycles, teaching, attending courses (like Train The Trainers), and ensuring your PBAs are signed off.
