FAQ

The Dermatology ST3 interview is the final stage of the UK national recruitment process for higher specialty training in dermatology. After shortlisting your portfolio/self-assessment, you’ll sit multiple stations assessing clinical reasoning, image-based and procedural knowledge, professionalism, commitment to the speciality, and communication.
Very competitive. In the 2024 round there were 274 applications for 52 posts (≈ 5.27 : 1). In 2025 there were 261 applications for 57 posts (≈ 4.58 : 1)

You should focus on several key areas:

  • Build a portfolio showing dermatology-specific activity (taster weeks, electives, audits, research) and secure MRCP by the deadline.

  • Practise station types: clinical/image-based dermatology cases, procedural reasoning, commitment to speciality.

  • Use structured frameworks for responses (e.g., STAR style for scenarios), rehearse online delivery and ensure your teaching/leadership/audit experience is clearly articulated.

The interview typically includes three stations of approximately 7 minutes each:

  • Station 1: Portfolio & commitment to dermatology

  • Station 2: Clinical scenario/image-based dermatology (skin oncology, inflammation, procedural)

  • Station 3: Professionalism, communication and service-improvement questions
