FAQ

The Obstetrics & Gynaecology ST1 interview is part of the UK national recruitment process for entry into specialty training. Following shortlisting based on your application, portfolio and MSRA score, shortlisted candidates attend structured interview stations that assess clinical reasoning, prioritisation, communication, professionalism and commitment to the specialty.

Competition for O&G training is high, with several applicants per post each year. In the most recent recruitment rounds, there were more than 2,000 applications for just over 300 posts. Strong interview performance, structured answers and evidence of genuine commitment to the speciality are essential to secure your preferred training region.

Successful preparation focuses on three key areas:

  • Understanding the national recruitment process, including the MSRA weighting and portfolio scoring system

  • Practising interview stations, especially clinical prioritisation, obstetric emergencies, communication and professionalism

  • Strengthening your portfolio by highlighting audit and quality improvement projects, leadership, teaching, taster experiences and research related to O&G.

The interview usually includes two to three stations. One focuses on a clinical scenario, such as managing obstetric or gynaecological emergencies, triage or prioritisation. Another explores your motivation for O&G, communication style, teamwork and professionalism. You may also be asked about your portfolio, leadership and understanding of the speciality’s challenges.

Applications usually open in autumn, with interviews held between January and March. You should prepare early, as portfolio submission and MSRA deadlines typically fall several months before interview dates.

Yes. The O&G ST1 interviews continue to be conducted online as part of the national recruitment process. Candidates should ensure a quiet environment, reliable internet connection and familiarity with video-interview platforms before the day.
