FAQ

The Plastic Surgery ST3 National Selection interview is a structured national assessment used to rank applicants for higher surgical training. It includes three stations: a structured interview that covers audit, research, teaching, ethics and management; a clinical scenario station with two focused cases; and an OSCE-style communication station assessing professionalism and consent. Your total mark combines interview performance with your verified portfolio and self-assessment score.
For 2026 recruitment, applications are expected to open in November 2025, with portfolio upload in January and interviews in February and March. Preparing early allows you to practise thoroughly, strengthen weaker areas and approach the process with confidence.
Plastic Surgery is one of the most competitive specialties in UK surgery. In 2024 there were 264 applicants for only 61 posts, meaning fewer than one in four candidates secured a training number. Every detail of your preparation matters, and success depends on structured, consistent practice that demonstrates registrar-level reasoning and confident communication.
Preparation should be strategic, not general. You’ll need to know how each domain is scored, practise timed responses, and use frameworks that align with national marking criteria. The Medset course provides step-by-step guidance, realistic mock stations and expert feedback so you can approach every question with clarity and composure.
The course reflects the official interview structure, guiding you through clinical decision-making, management, leadership, consent, ethics and communication. Each area is taught with model answers and practical frameworks designed to help you gain marks efficiently and perform at registrar standard.
