Train The Trainers & Application Points

How many points will a Train The Trainers (or Teach The Teachers) course earn me for my application?

Introduction

Completing an application for a training post can be demanding. To make your application stand out, it is vital to showcase the full extent of your experience and earn as many self-assessment points as possible. The information here is designed to help you ensure your application reflects your qualifications while following the correct guidance.

Which Course & How Many Points?

We frequently receive inquiries about this topic, as the guidance often changes and can be confusing. Generally, the scoring criteria differ slightly between medical and surgical training programs.

If you are deciding which course to pursue, it’s essential to choose one that maximises your portfolio or self-assessment points. Below is a table summarising the latest scoring for our most popular teaching courses based on guidelines from the Physician Specialty Recruitment Office (PSRO) and the National Recruitment Office (NRO).

The self-assessment scoring for these programmes differs this year from previous years. The document “Changes to the application scoring matrix from 2025…” was posted on the Physician Higher Specialty Training Recruitment Document Library in December 2023.

Here is a copy of the summary table in the “Training in Teaching” section of this document.

For IMT or ACCS at CT1 level, you score 1 point for our 6-hour Train the Trainer Virtual Classroom, meeting the requirements of “synchronously delivered teaching…taught by a live teacher”.
